We are delighted to be supporting this important family business research

Family Business Unit Scotland has recently completed the first ever piece of research into the largest family firms in Scotland and quantified the turnover, profit before tax (PBT) and employment of the largest 100 such firms. The results are in, and The Herald published them recently in full. In addition, there was a major piece about the research online here: The Herald – Top 100 Scottish Family Firms

FBU Scotland has also included the top 20 by PBT and a detailed piece can be found here: Top Scottish Family Firms

They have also posted a piece on LinkedIn so feel free to comment/like and share here: Scottish Family Business Top 100

They also announced that the following FBU member firms are included in the top 100:

  • Walkers Shortbread
  • Mactaggart & Mickel Group Limited
  • Scottish Leather Group Limited
  • James Donaldson & Sons Limited
  • Zonal Retail Data Systems Limited
  • Graham’s The Family Dairy Limited
  • JW Filshill Limited

Feedback has already been great and we are delighted with the findings. Collectively, the top 100 businesses generate £16.6 billion turnover, £1.1 billion PBT and employ over 103,000 people. These figures will certainly help to give credibility to the family business sector in Scotland. Carbon is delighted to be supporting this extensive piece of research, which clearly shows the valuable contribution the family business sector is making to the Scottish economy. This is a sector which needs to be both recognised for the excellent work done to date and supported so it can make an even greater contribution in future.

Carbon’s involvement with family businesses typically begins at a time of change. This might be when value is about to be realised on exit or when it is time for value to pass to the next generation. Our role is to help our clients realise their dreams and ambitions with the peace of mind that they aren’t ever going to run out of money. For this reason, it is important that we spend time listening to our clients to clearly understand what they want to achieve both now and into the future. We come to understand “what their number is”. Do you know yours?

With our family business clients this means understanding what each generation is looking to achieve and then putting in place a suitable plan to give them the best chance of achieving their individual goals. We can then apply our planning-led approach to the different generations, before turning back to the business to determine how all the individual objectives can be met.
