Carbon takes part in Business Fives tournament

The sun was shining and excitement was in the air as Carbon Financial entered a team to participate in the latest Business Fives football tournament held at the Sighthill Powerleague in Edinburgh.

The last time we were involved in this tournament was the inaugural one back in 2016. Since then the event has grown exponentially, which is testament to the hard-work and organisation of John McClarey (Business Fives MD) and his team.

For those not aware, the tournament format is an initial round robin with teams playing for a position to go into three conferences: the Champions League; Europa League; and, Europa Conference League. Meaning each team played a minimum of 5 games on the day.

Unfortunately, disaster struck early on for Carbon when our team captain, Michael Wilson, decided he would hurl himself over a fence but forget to take his ankle with him. One trip to the medical tent later and Carbon were down their captain before a single ball had been kicked. This seemed to set the tone for the rest of the day with multiple defeats and a last place position firmly secured.

However despite the results, the spirit and attitude of both the Carbon team and the event in general was first class, where a lot of banter and good times were had. A shout out to our goal scorers: Darren McMillan (2), Dean McFarlane (1) and Ryan Doran (1) for providing some consolation to the Carbon team.

Ending on a more positive note, and the most important one, our joining fee for the tournament included a donation to our chosen charity, Dnipro Kids. This charity helps to raise money for children impacted by the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Carbon’s Wellness team had set up a fundraiser in May for staff members to collectively walk the distance between all our offices (611 miles!) over a 2-week period to raise money for Dnipro Kids. We were delighted to be able to make a further donation to Dnipro Kids as part of the Business Fives tournament.
