Embracing Equity | International Women's Day | Zoe Malpas

On 8th March 2023, we celebrate International Women’s Day, this year’s theme is embracing equity, promoting a world free or bias, stereotypes and discrimination.

International Women’s Day is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating women’s equality. Carbon is committed to creating a diverse, inclusive environment for our team and clients. We believe that cognitive diversity across gender, ages, race and religion has a positive impact on our internal teams and our external interactions with clients. It is becoming a more important focus of clients, borne out in our recent client survey whereby feedback on ensuring a strong female presence in our planning team was important to them.

As a people focused organisation and an employer of several women in key roles, Carbon is using the opportunity of International Women’s Day 2023 to celebrate the achievements of our team, showcase their talents and help #Embraceequity in the finance industry.

In this edition of our International Women’s Day series, we speak to Financial Planner, Zoe Malpas about her role, her achievements and inspiration.

What does your role involve?

As a Financial Planner, it is my responsibility to look after our clients financial affairs, helping them to maximise their spending potential and to hopefully enhance their standard of living by identifying what is really important to them.

What do you enjoy about your job?

Creating and maintaining relationships is the most rewarding part of my role and it’s what pushes me to always put our client’s needs and interests first.

I love meeting with our clients and hearing all about what they have been up to since we last met, and looking at photos of the newest grandchild welcomed into the family.

Can you tell us something you are particularly proud of?

I am very proud of myself for the resilience and courage it has taken for me to become a Financial Planner, and even more so for the determination to find the right firm who will allow me to put our clients first and allow me to be my true and authentic self. Doing this in what used to be a very male dominated industry has been challenging at times, but worth every minute. It fills me with so much inspiration to see so many women joining the industry and making a great name for themselves.

Tell us about a woman you know who inspires you.

I am extremely lucky to be surrounded by inspirational women who are kind, caring and supportive. My close friends are superheroes… juggling family life with their careers and doing so with kindness and strength, how can I not be inspired by them? And of course my mum, I still live by the lessons and morals she instilled in me from a young age.

I am also extremely privileged to be able to work alongside some incredible women, learning from them each day and the lessons they have learned along the way.

How did you get into the financial planning industry?

Whilst studying at Abertay University, a lecturer of mine encouraged us to differentiate ourselves from the rest of the students graduating. I immediately started to apply for summer positions and part time work within the industry, to try to arm myself with some experience that other students didn’t have. In doing so, I landed a job within Dundee City Councils tax and revenues dept. This is when I was introduced to the head of Financial Planning at a firm in Dundee, and the rest is history.

My passion for helping people to get the most out of their finances and live the best version of their lifestyles was unleashed and I feel extremely fortune to get to continue with my passion at a firm like Carbon, who embrace diversity, equality and allow us all to truly put our client’s needs first.
